Are there dust balls under your piano bench? Is the air coming out of your students’ flutes stale? Join the Woodbridge Music Club on Saturday, March 24 at 2:00 in the Occoquan Room at The McCoart Building for a forum pinpointing areas where we can help each other find ways to jumpstart our teaching.

This workshop will be a round table discussion that focuses on areas of need submitted by members, and hopefully solved by members. We will also have a place for teachers to display any special materials they have found helpful in their studio. Future workshops for the club will also be discussed.

Please let us know what you would like discussed at this workshop and also feel free to contact us if you have any questions or suggestions. We look forward to seeing all of you on March 24th at this member‐driven workshop!

This message comes to us from 2 of our very own members, Cyndy Elmore and Susan Tury. They are co-chairs for the NFMC National Convention that is coming up in June. It is a tremendous undertaking to put on a convention such as this, and they are asking for our help to bring it off. Please volunteer to do all you can to help out in some way or another. I'm sure there are dozens of tasks that will need doing along the way, especially as we get closer to the June deadline. In addition to physical tasks, Cyndy and Susan are asking our monetary support and suggest several ways to give that support. Please consider placing an ad in the Official Program Book or simply becoming a donor. Perhaps there are businesses that you are associated with that might support this effort. Please read the note and attachment below. Keep in mind the deadline date of March 31.

A message from Cyndy Elmore & Susan Tury, co-chairs for the NFMC Convention coming up June 6 - 12 in McClean, VA:

" We are in the final months of our planning for the 20ll Convention that the VFMC is hosting for the NFMC Convention in McLean, VA on June 6 - 12, 2011. We need the support of every member to be able to accomplish this task. We will need as many of you as are able to come to the Convention and also to assist us in many tasks to make this Convention a wonderful experience for you and the other attendees. We are also enclosing several ways that each member or club can support this great endeavor financially. You may, individually, by studios, junior clubs, board members or as a club, donate money in several ways: 1. See the attachment for placing an ad in the Official Program Book. 2. Have your name placed in the Official Program Book on the DONORS page by donating $25 for the Blue Level or $100 or more for the Gold Level. We need everyone's support to make this a great Convention.

We need to receive this money as soon as possible. The deadline is March 31, 2011.

Thank you.”

It's almost time for our fall House Concert, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 5:00 pm. Elaine Brady will be hosting the event, and we have slots available for performers. These gatherings are informal and quite relaxed, so there is not as much pressure as during our public performances. We would love to have a big crowd of players and listeners.

Please let me know if you will be attending, either as a player or an audience member. My e-mail address is KatieKT@verizon.net. RSVP date is November 16, and we shall be reminding you again.

I am looking forward to playing on Dec. 4 and to hearing others' performances as well.

Here we are once again nearing the end of summer. Hopefully you’ve had some well deserved vacation time whether away or at home and are ready to embrace yet again another new year. As your president, I welcome you back and, together with the other officers and board members look forward to working with you to make the Woodbridge Music Club the best it can be. Thanks to the help of several very dedicated members, our 2010-11 Season is ready to go.

We will begin the year Saturday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church (1400 G Street, Woodbridge). The evening will include a delightful hour of music performed by our very own membership with selections featuring the piano, trumpet, violin, marimba, voice and organ. Afterwards, we will have a social hour so that we can get reacquainted with each other and get to know those who have recently joined us. Members are asked to bring some kind of goodies (appetizers, fruits, vegetables or desserts) for the tables. We are offering something new this year at the first concert. We will have tables set up in the lobby with information about other events and opportunities in the area. Plan to come early or stay afterwards to peruse the tables. If you are interested in advertising your “Musical Opportunity” please contact Laura Riski at laura@riski.biz by September 18, 2010. Please join us on the 25th to support your club in this season opener. Yearbooks will be available that evening as well.

It's just around the corner! The Woodbridge Music Club Gold Cup Recital and Student Recital. Both recitals will be held on Sunday May 2, 2010 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Woodbridge, VA and mark the beginning of National Music Week. The Gold Cup Recital is scheduled for 2:00 and is open to any students who have earned a gold cup this year. There is no application fee for this recital. A Student Recital is scheduled at 3:00 and is open to all members' students on their chosen instrument. The application fee for this recital is like all the other student recitals - $7.50 per performer ($10 per family). This is the first year we are offering a student recital other than the Gold Cup Recital in the spring. This provides a springtime opportunity for all students to perform. I am hoping that teachers will take advantage of this opportunity so that we can continue to offer it in the future. All instruments/voice are welcome.

Send the following information to Grace Reid, along with a check for the fees if applicable (made out to Woodbridge Music Club) by April 17, 2010.

-Student's name, grade, age, level of study and/or festival level

-Accompanist or Duet partner's name, when applicable

-Composition and composer (first and last names)

-Teacher's name and telephone number

-Gold Cup to be received (for Gold Cup Recital only)

Students are expected to wear appropriate performance attire, arrive 5 - 10 minutes early, perform their pieces from memory, and bow when they finish playing.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

The next House Concert is March 13, 2010, at 5 p.m. at Elaine Brady’s home. If you would like to perform or attend, please contact Donna Baldwin (no later than February 28th). Performers should provide the name(s) of their piece(s), movement(s), composer(s), and how long each piece is so that a program can be prepared.

Donna Baldwin, House Concerts Chairperson.

Please consider participating in some way or other - whether as a listener or a performer. These programs provide performance opportunities for those who wish to play and provide opportunities for members to gather together as a group. I would like to have a brief club meeting that evening since we've not had one in a while. I believe meetings provide cohesion to a group and I think that the house concert venue might be the perfect time.

House Concert - Saturday, March 13 - 5:00 p.m. - Home of Elaine Brady

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you on the 13th.

This is a reminder that there will be a WMC Concert on Saturday, January 23 at 7:00 pm at Westminster at Lake Ridge Retirement Center (12191 Clipper Drive, Woodbridge). They have a wonderful facility there, and we will be entertained by the Classical FX Vocal Quartet. I hope to see you there.

The Kiki Thomaidis application form will be coming very soon. Its postmark deadline is February 8. This year we have changed the instrumental division from winds to instrumental/voice. This provides opportunities for instrumental and voice students that weren't there before. WMC House Concert Coordinator

Previously,

As you know, from Elaine Brady’s earlier events notice, Betty McCary is hosting the November 7th Saturdays at Five House Concert. Please let me know by November 1st if you would like to attend or perform.

If you’d like to perform, please also let me know what pieces you’ll play (title, movement(s), composer, and timing) so I can prepare the program. Our house concerts are informal opportunities to try out new repertoire or to play polished pieces in a supportive environment, so anyone who wants to play should feel free to do so. It isn’t necessary to be ready for prime time!

Betty invites members to stay after the concert to share a meal and to socialize. She plans to serve a delicious vegetable soup stew (I’ve tasted it, and it’s good!), dessert, and decaf coffee. Those who would like to bring bottled water, crackers, cheese , or fruit to share are welcomed to do so.

It should be a fun evening.

You can e-mail me at DonnaKBaldwin@comcast.net or leave a voice mail message at 703-791-7978.

Thanks!

National Music Week is May 2-9, 2010 and the theme is "Music... A Key to the Future." There are two items already in place for your students that you need to know about.

First, there is the nationally sponsored essay contest, open to grades 7-12. I am enclosing that form and if you need another template, they are available at the NFMC site.

Second, we are searching among the talented WMC students for a logo to use on all materials to be published during National Music Week. We may even have items available, for sale, with this logo on with proceeds going to our scholarship fund. I am also enclosing this form, for you to distribute to your students.

If you do not receive either form, or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

My name is Sarah Crockett and I work for Forte International a non-profit exchange association based in Washington, DC. I am emailing you with a little bit of a strange question. Currently we have a boy from China, Wen Zhang who is studying at Gar-Field HS for the school year. We just found out that his host dad is being transferred out of town so we are looking for a new host family for him. He will be in the US for the school year, however at this point we are looking for any family who is interested even if it's just as a more short term hosting experience.

I thought that as the President & Vice-President you might be able to help spread the word about Wen and the possibility of finding him a family to other families and individuals in the Woodbridge Music Club. Of course I would be happy to speak with you more and I can send you more information as well, but I just wanted to send you a quick email to begin with. So, feel free to call or email with any questions and as I said I would love to speak with you further. My phone number is 202-628-8226 and our toll-free number is 1-888-893-6783. Again, I know this is a strange request, so I thank you for any help or guidance you may be able to offer. I hope you have a great day and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Fellow WMC Members,

Here we are once again nearing the end of summer. Hopefully you’ve had some well deserved vacation time whether away or at home and are ready to embrace yet again another new year. As your president, I welcome you all back and, together with the other officers and board members look forward to working with all of you to make the Woodbridge Music Club the best it can be. Thanks to the help of several very dedicated members, our 2009-10 Season is ready to go.

We will begin the year Saturday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (12975 Purcell Road, Manassas, VA 20112). The program will include a variety of selections featuring the trumpet, violin, marimba, voice and organ. Afterwards, we will have a social hour so that we can get reacquainted with each other and get to know those who have recently joined us. Yearbooks will be available for you before and after the program. Please take the yearbook with your name printed on the front cover. Peruse it at your leisure so that you don’t miss anything the club has to offer as the year goes by.

Thank you for allowing me to share the needs of our church with you. I appreciate your commitment to your church and your ministry there. You mentioned that you may know someone who is interested in interviewing for the music positon in our church. Therefore, I would like to give you the parameters of what I am looking for.

1. The person would coordinate the songs for Sunday morning services. We have an 8:30 and 11:00 A.M. worship service.

2. The person would also work from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. on Thrusday night to prepare the choir for Sunday. We are not an advanaced choir so the music would be relatively basic songs.

3. The person will need to contact me at the following information for an interview. We can discuss finances and music during that time.

Thank you for your help.

I have lived in Prince William County since 1974 and retired from Potomac Hospital, in Woodbridge, 2 years ago, after serving for 27 years. I have placed and supervised foreign exchange students for the last 8 or 9 years (over 200 of them). I live locally and have a passion for helping these students experience life in the U.S. It's my own little sense of striving for world peace as we show them what this country really is about and learn what their country is about.

I am attaching a flyer of our musicians who would like to continue playing music while in the U.S. I wanted to see if any of you could possibly send out my flyer, or make contact with any potential host families. Information on our program is provided on the flyer and I am available to answer any other questions that may come up.

I have some talented musicians who are academically very strong. I hope that you will consider spreading the word to try to help me find host families for these students. If you know of a family or can suggest other opportunities for me to find host families, please let me know. If there is ever a time that I could talk to the orchestra students, their parents, or have a table with information at an event, please let me know. I would welcome the opportunity.

I appreciate your consideration and time.

It seems there was some confusion about performance mediums for the upcoming house concert on April 25. Everyone is invited to perform no matter what instrument is played. It is great to have variety in a program such as this. The fact that there are 2 grand pianos available simply opens up another option (two-piano music) for performance that is not always available. Sorry for the confusion.

The past few days have been beautiful – we’ve been given a taste of warm weather in anticipation of what is to come. Along with the movement toward warmer weather comes an onslaught of musical activities. Actually this active period began at the end of February and will continue on through May. I will recap for you those activities that have already taken place and then enumerate those that are to come.

	•	The NFMC Festival is almost completed with one final day of auditions coming up on Saturday, March 15. Almost 1700 students will have participated in the three-day music festival this year. Thanks to all who helped out in any way.

	•	The Kiki Thomaidis Scholarship Competition took place this past weekend, March 6-7. The 9 winners were featured in a winners’ recital on Sunday at St. ... At the end of the program, the students were presented their awards by Irene Cimino, a member of the Thomaidis family who founded this Scholarship Competition in their mother’s memory. •	Friday, May 8 7:00 p.m. National Music Week “Evening of Salon Music” for High School Musicians

...We all remember reading about those evenings in the Romantic Era when musicians would gather together for an evening of song and socializing. Wouldn't it be a wonderful idea to offer this opportunity to musically advancing high school students? And what other wonderful time than during National Music Week? Elaine Brady has offered her home the evening of May 8 for students to come together, share their craft, and enjoy some refreshments. It would be an informal gathering – a chance to perform and meet others who have a similar interest in music. We are looking for a variety of music and instruments, so all are welcome. Please send me a list of names and contact information (address, phone number, email address) of students who might want to participate in this event. I would like to personally invite each of them. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me and please respond ASAP, so that I can make final arrangements for the evening.

...Friday, May 15 7:00 p.m. – You won’t want to miss an electrifying performance of Makota Nakura on the marimba at Westminster at Lake Ridge, 12191 Clipper Drive, Woodbridge. Please note the new date, time and place for this program.

Next year’s WMC application form will be coming out in the next few months. When it comes, please be sure to complete the NEW Application form and send it in with your dues for next year. Remember that it is only through the recruitment of new members that a club can continue to grow. Spread the word about our club and encourage others to join. Please share with us your ideas for programs, workshops, and other types of offerings that we might incorporate in the future and continue to check on the website for any news or information about the Woodbridge Music Club. January 27, 2009

Dear Fellow WMC Members,

The Woodbridge Music Club started off the New Year last Saturday with a delightful program at Westminster at Lake Ridge performed by the Navy Band Brass Quartet. The program was very well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by the residents and others in attendance. Thanks to all who helped in preparation for this concert.

With the New Year also comes new resolutions, and one of mine is to continue to keep you informed about musical events associated with our club. There are a lot of student events coming up in the next couple of months as well as WMC programs and meetings. Below is a list of those upcoming events. Please check in your yearbook or on the web site for additional information.

The second student recital of the Season will take place on Sunday, February 8 at 2:30 p.m. (note the time change!) in St. Paul United Methodist Church, (1400 G Street, Woodbridge).

There will be a Board meeting at the home of Betty McCary (1608 Ashford Place, Woodbridge) on Tuesday, February 10 at 9:30 a.m.

The VFMC Festival will take place on February 20-21 and on March 14 at the Manassas Baptist Church (8800 Sudley Rd., Manassas). All paperwork for this event has been submitted, and the teachers and students are in the final days of performance preparation. If you are new to this event, please feel free to contact me or another member who has taken part in the past.

The Kiki Thomaidis Scholarship Competition is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7 at St. Paul United Methodist Church. This is a wonderful opportunity for music students to compete. A mandatory winners’ recital is scheduled that Sunday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. TEACHERS, be sure your students know that in order for the winners to receive their certificates and monetary awards they must perform the next day in the winners’ recital. There will be no exceptions.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 21 when Donna Baldwin will present an evening of piano music at 7:00 p.m. in St. Paul United Methodist Church. The program should be great. It is free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated as always. Please plan to attend and perhaps bring along a neighbor, friend, or potential new member.

I want to thank everyone who has helped make our club run so smoothly this year. As we head into the spring, I hope you will share some of your ideas for next year. Remember to visit our web site for any information concerning or related to our club. I wish you all a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you soon.

Musically,

Elaine Brady, D.M.A.

December 1, 2008

November WMC events:

•	Our first house concert of November 8 was an evening enjoyed by all. Six members took part in the program (John Schroeder, Donna Baldwin, David Salisbury, Robert Shuffett, June Shuffett and Elaine Brady) with a total of twelve members in attendance. The music was great, and the food and company afterward was delightful. I look forward to the next house concert on April 25, 2009.

•	The Pelel/delPino concert on the 15th was phenomenal. The program was reasonably well attended, but I wish more could have been there to experience such a program. Thanks to all who helped make the evening a success.

•	Our first student recital on November 23 went well. 31 students from 6 different teachers played, and all performed without difficulty. The level of performance clearly illustrates the quality of teaching in our membership. I encourage all teachers to have their students participate in the next recital (February 8 at 2:30 p.m. not 7:00 as originally stated in the yearbook.) The experience for the student is tremendous, and the additional revenue for our club is very helpful.

Here are some reminders about upcoming events:

•	Our holiday luncheon is coming up on Tuesday, December 9. Participation in this event seems to be down. I know this is a very busy time of year, but if you are free at 11:30 a.m. that day, please plan to join us at Osprey’s Landing Restaurant (401 Belmont Bay Drive, Woodbridge 22191). Call or email June Shuffett for reservations and meal choices ASAP.

•	Saturday afternoon “Concerts at Occoquan” take place in front of Quinn’s jewelers (199 Union Street, Occoquan). There are 3 remaining concerts:

December 6 2:00-4:00 p.m. St. George Episcopal Church Choir

December13 12:00-2:00 p.m. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church Choir

December 20 12:00-2:00 p.m. Grace United Methodist Church Choir

•	Volunteer Hours (Music Outreach) are due to Shannon Catabui no later than January 15, 2009. Watch for an email from her. Refer to the yearbook for more information and form.

Remember to frequently check our web site (WoodbridgeMusicClub.org) for club news and information. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season. Look for more WMC news next year!

November 6, 2008

Dear WMC Members,

The leaves have fallen and the winter season is soon to be upon us. The holidays are fast approaching, and I can think of no busier time of year. With that in mind, I thought I’d try to stay ahead of things and send out the November/December newsletter before things really got going.

Our event for the month of October was the District II Meeting of the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs. This year our club hosted the meeting which took place on October 17. The entertainment was provided by Betty McCary in a presentation entitled the “World of Wanda Landowska”. It was enjoyed by all as was the lovely luncheon that followed. Many thanks go out to Betty for her wonderful performance and Cyndy Elmore for her efforts in planning and setting up the luncheon.

Here are some reminders about upcoming events:

	◦	Our first house concert will take place this coming Saturday, November 8, at 5 p.m. at the home of Dr. Elaine Brady. Donna Baldwin has assembled a lovely program of five or so members. If you are free, please join us. Everyone is asked to bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Refer to the “House Concert” email for address and directions.

	◦	An evening of cello and piano with Amit Peled and Daniel del Pino will be presented on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Woodbridge. The program is free and open to the public but donations are appreciated. I urge you to spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and acquaintances about this wonderful concert and perhaps bring someone new with you that evening.

	◦	Our first student recital of the season will take place on Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. in St. Paul United Methodist Church, Woodbridge. (Please consider entering your students in the student recitals. These programs provide additional performance opportunities for your students and additional revenue for our club.) Submit your entries to Dr. Elaine Brady by November 8. Refer to your yearbook for more information.

	◦	Our holiday luncheon is coming up on Tuesday, December 9. We are planning to go to Osprey’s Landing Restaurant (401 Belmont Bay Drive, Woodbridge 22191) at 11:30 a.m. Please join us if you are free that morning.

	◦	Every year the WMC hosts a series of community free concerts in Occoquan during the Christmas Season. They take place on Saturdays from Thanksgiving until Christmas. Perhaps you can spend an afternoon in Occoquan, shopping for the Holidays and enjoying one of these concerts! Please refer to your yearbook for specific information.

A final reminder concerning the NFMC festival for students: You must federate your class if you intend to have your students participate in the festival. Contact Natalie Steinbach (ymsfred@earthlink.net) for the form to federate your class. Complete it and mail it in by November 30. Also, contact Margaret Hunt (703-368-8766) about festival specifics – student applications, turn-in dates, etc.

Watch for an email concerning Volunteer Hours. (Music Outreach) Please keep track of all your hours and submit them to Shannon Catabui no later than January 15, 2009. Refer to the yearbook for the form and other specifics.

Our web site, WoodbridgeMusicClub.org, is fantastic. Many thanks to our web master, Bill Riski, for all the time and effort he has put into building and maintaining our web site. If you have any pictures that we might use on the site please send them to Bill at billriski@mac.com. Don’t forget to refer to the site for such things as program information and newsletters.

I wish you all a glorious holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you at one or the other WMC event.

The first student recital of the year will take place this coming Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Please ask your students to arrive about 10 minutes ahead of time and wear appropriate performance attire - not jeans or t-shirts or tennis shoes. Please remind them that they should bow when they finish playing. All students will sit together in the front in their assigned seats. I will be there to direct them. There were 7 teachers who sent students with a total of 30 performers. Most of these pieces are beginner works and very short (1 minute or less). Should be a nice program.

Participating teachers include:

Lana Bailey

Elaine Brady

Betty McCary

Pat Moler

Patty Parker

Susan Price

David Salisbury

If you sent me entries and your name does not appear here, please get in touch with me.

I encourage all teachers to enter students in these recitals. It would be nice to have a variety of instruments and voice as well. If we have an overabundance of entries I can divide them into 2 shorter programs at 2:00 and 3:15 rather than one program at 2:30.

See you Sunday.

The first Woodbridge Music Club (WMC) Saturdays at Five House Concert of the season will be on November 8th at 5 p.m. at Betty McCary’s home. If you’d like to perform or attend, please contact me at DonnaKBaldwin@comcast.net.

Betty will serve her delicious Fall vegetable soup and a dessert, along with decaf coffee. Members are asked to bring cheese, crackers, bottle water, drinks, or any little finger foods that would go with the menu to share. Members will be welcomed to have a light supper or to nibble on the snacks, as they wish.

There’s still room on the program if you’d like to perform or attend, so please contact me by Friday, October 14th to reserve a spot.

Thanks!

Our first program on September 20 was a tremendous success. The turnout was great and the performances were well received. Many thanks to all who helped make the evening a success.

Members received their yearbooks that evening. We have yearbooks left for the following members: Baird, Bennett, Bloomer, Catabui, Crookstons, Darnell, Ellsmore, Lenau, Marino, Moehlenkamp, Nelson-Tracey, Ruck, Whittle. If your name does not appear here and you did not receive your book, please let me know, and we will see that one is set aside for you. Yearbooks can be picked up at my home (6842 Lochmere Dr., Manassas, VA 20112). I will leave them in a basket on the porch. Please contact me for directions or if you have a problem coming by.

Our next event is the District II board meeting on Friday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. in St. ... All members are invited to attend. Betty McCary will present a program entitled “The World of Wanda Landowska”. A meeting will follow with a pot luck luncheon afterwards. Please come support your club and find out what goes on in other clubs in our district. Cyndy Elmore has taken charge of the set up for the luncheon. If you would like to help, please contact her.

...If you intend to take students to the NFMC festival in February, you must federate your class. Forms for those who have sent students in the past have already been mailed out and are due on November 30. If you are a new member and would like to participate this year please contact Natalie Steinbach at ymsfred@earthlink.net.

Our first student recital for the year is coming up on Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. Please submit entries no later than November 8 to Dr. ... Be sure to include first and last names of composer, title, name of performer, age, grade, and level of study.

...Our first house concert (Saturdays at Five) is planned for November 8 at the home of Betty McCary (1608 Ashford Place, Woodbridge, VA 22191). This will be our American Music Celebration this year so please consider playing something that evening by an American Composer.

On Saturday, November 15, the WMC will present Amit Peled and Daniel del Pino in an evening of cello and piano. These performers come highly acclaimed so be sure to mark your calendars. The program promises to be wonderful.

Please note the following changes to be made in your yearbook:

•	Cathy Hill’s phone number should be: 703-680-5129.

•	Christmas luncheon date will be Tuesday, December 9 not December 4 as in the yearbook.

•	VFMC Festival dates are February 20-21 (not 27-28). (Festival fees have been raised this year.)

Our club has grown by over 20% this past year. Our membership of 55 is more diversified than ever. We have vocalists, pianists, organists, string players, brass players, percussionists, choir directors, and music lovers of all kinds. We want to continue to grow our club, and we need your help in doing that. Please spread the word and encourage others, musicians and non-musicians alike, to join our club. Invite them to our programs and tell them what our club is all about – that our mission is to promote music and musicians in our community.

As an affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs (and the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs under them) we have much the same purpose – to promote the performance of music and the education of musicians in our community. We do this in numerous ways: We present free community concerts performed by highly trained musicians throughout the year; we offer performance opportunities for members through in house concerts and other program participation; we have a teacher referral service which provides students for teachers and teachers for students; we provide performance opportunities for students through recitals, scholarship competitions and festival auditions. Our support comes in part by a grant from the Prince William Park Authority, but we could not continue on without the support of our members and new members.

The most common way to get new members and grow a club is by personally inviting them to join. Keep this in mind as we progress through the year.

Remember to check the WMC web site frequently for information. Our site is growing and changing daily. This newsletter will appear on the web site for your easy access.

...Enjoy the beautiful fall weather and the October holiday – Halloween! Hope to see you October 17.

Hopefully, you’ve had some well deserved vacation time whether away or at home and are ready to embrace yet again another new year. As newly elected president, I welcome you all back and, together with the other officers and board members, look forward to working with all of you to make the Woodbridge Music Club the best it can be. Thanks to the help of several very dedicated members, our 2008-09 season is ready to go.

We will begin the year on Saturday evening, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church (1400 G Street, Woodbridge, VA 22191). The program will begin with a warm welcome for our many new members followed by a delightful hour of music performed by “duos” from our very own membership. The program will include a variety of selections featuring trumpet, marimba, voice and piano. Afterwards, we will have a social hour so that we can get to know those who have recently joined us. Members are asked to bring some kind of goodies for the tables - Jean Sevon and Linda Girten will be our hostesses that evening. Please come support your club in this season opener. Yearbooks will be available for you before and after the program. Please peruse them at your leisure so that you don’t miss anything the club has to offer as the year goes by.

On Friday morning, October 17, we will be hosting the District II board meeting, and all members are invited to attend. The meeting will take place at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Betty McCary will present a short program entitled “The World of Wanda Landowska”. A meeting and pot luck luncheon will follow. (Please bring a dish to pass. No kitchen facilities will be available that day, so be sure the food is ready to serve.) Please put this on your calendars and plan to attend if your can. We are looking for volunteers to help decorate, set up, and tear down that day. Please let June Shuffett or me know if you would be willing to help out.

We have some terrific Saturday evening concerts on the agenda for this season:

November 15 – Amit Peled, cello and David del Pino, piano

7:00 p.m. ... Paul United Methodist Church

...7:00 p.m. ... Paul United Methodist Church

May 20 - Makoto Nakura, marimba

7:30 p.m. ... Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church

We have scheduled several house concerts (Saturdays at Five) in which members perform for each other in a relaxed atmosphere. Please come play or just listen. Numerous Saturday afternoon performances for our “Christmas in Occoquan” series are listed in your yearbook. As the year progresses, information will be coming out about National Music Week concerts which takes place the first week in May.

For your students we have three student recitals and a winner’s recital planned. Please note that the February student recital time should be changed to 2:30. We will have the usual NFMC festival, the Kiki Thomaidis Competition and the Senior Scholarship Competition. The Mary Smart Preliminaries are scheduled for April 25. Please add this to your book.

We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions. Please feel free to pass on your ideas, and they will be warehoused for future consideration. As the new president, I am just learning the ropes. I promise to do the best job I can for you and am asking your help in return. I am proud to be a member of this service oriented organization, and I take our mission seriously – to promote the performance and education of music in our community. I urge all of you to join me in celebrating music in our community this year. I hope to see you on the evening of September 20.
