October Newsletter

October 1, 2008

Dear WMC Members,

We have gotten off to a great start in the 2008-09 Season. Our first program on September 20 was a tremendous success. The turnout was great and the performances were well received. Many thanks to all who helped make the evening a success.

Members received their yearbooks that evening. We have yearbooks left for the following members: Baird, Bennett, Bloomer, Catabui, Crookstons, Darnell, Ellsmore, Lenau, Marino, Moehlenkamp, Nelson-Tracey, Ruck, Whittle. If your name does not appear here and you did not receive your book, please let me know, and we will see that one is set aside for you. Yearbooks can be picked up at my home (6842 Lochmere Dr., Manassas, VA 20112). I will leave them in a basket on the porch. Please contact me for directions or if you have a problem coming by.

Our next event is the District II board meeting on Friday, October 17 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul United Methodist Church. All members are invited to attend. Betty McCary will present a program entitled “The World of Wanda Landowska”. A meeting will follow with a pot luck luncheon afterwards. Please come support your club and find out what goes on in other clubs in our district. Cyndy Elmore has taken charge of the set up for the luncheon. If you would like to help, please contact her.

If you intend to take students to the NFMC festival in February, you must federate your class. Forms for those who have sent students in the past have already been mailed out and are due on November 30. If you are a new member and would like to participate this year please contact Natalie Steinbach at ymsfred@earthlink.net.

Our first student recital for the year is coming up on Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. Please submit entries no later than November 8 to Dr. Elaine Brady at
pe973@aol.com. Be sure to include first and last names of composer, title, name of performer, age, grade, and level of study. Entrance fee is $5.

Our first house concert (Saturdays at Five) is planned for November 8 at the home of Betty McCary (1608 Ashford Place, Woodbridge, VA 22191). This will be our American Music Celebration this year so please consider playing something that evening by an American Composer.

On Saturday, November 15, the WMC will present Amit Peled and Daniel del Pino in an evening of cello and piano. These performers come highly acclaimed so be sure to mark your calendars. The program promises to be wonderful.

Please note the following changes to be made in your yearbook:

Our club has grown by over 20% this past year. Our membership of 55 is more diversified than ever. We have vocalists, pianists, organists, string players, brass players, percussionists, choir directors, and music lovers of all kinds. We want to continue to grow our club, and we need your help in doing that. Please spread the word and encourage others, musicians and non-musicians alike, to join our club. Invite them to our programs and tell them what our club is all about – that our mission is to promote music and musicians in our community.

As an affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs (and the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs under them) we have much the same purpose – to promote the performance of music and the education of musicians in our community. We do this in numerous ways: We present free community concerts performed by highly trained musicians throughout the year; we offer performance opportunities for members through in house concerts and other program participation; we have a teacher referral service which provides students for teachers and teachers for students; we provide performance opportunities for students through recitals, scholarship competitions and festival auditions. Our support comes in part by a grant from the Prince William Park Authority, but we could not continue on without the support of our members and new members.

The most common way to get new members and grow a club is by personally inviting them to join. Keep this in mind as we progress through the year.

Remember to check the WMC web site frequently for information. Our site is growing and changing daily. This newsletter will appear on the web site for your easy access. The address is:

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather and the October holiday – Halloween! Hope to see you October 17.

    Musically,
    Elaine Brady, D.M.A.
