November/December 2009 Newsletter

A Letter from the President

November 1, 2009

Dear Fellow WMC Members,

The leaves are falling and the winter season is soon to be upon us. The holidays are fast
approaching, and I can think of no busier time of year. With that in mind, I thought I’d try to
stay ahead of things and send out the November/December newsletter before things really got
going.

Our event for the month of October was the Piano Recital that my son, Sean and I presented last
Saturday evening. The program was well attended and well received. Thanks to everyone who
helped out with the reception.

YEARBOOKS – I will sit a basket on my porch with the remaining yearbooks (6842 Lochmere
Dr., Manassas located near Hoadly and Spriggs). If you have not received yours yet, you can
stop by and take it. (They will be arranged alphabetically in the basket.) Also, I intend to take
them to the house concert on the 7th and to the program on the 14th. Please try to pick up yours if
at all possible.

Here are some reminders about upcoming events for November and December:

• Saturday, November 7, 5:00 pm. Our first house concert will take place at the home
of Betty McCary (1608 Ashford Place, Woodbridge). Contact Donna Baldwin, our
House Concert Coordinator, with performance information if you are able to play or if
you have any questions. Please plan to join us if you can. Afterwards, everyone is
invited to share a meal of Betty’s delicious stew, dessert, and coffee. Feel free to bring
something to share (bottled water, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers).

• Saturday, November 14, 7:00 pm. The next of our Saturday Evening Performances
will focus on vocal music as Tenor, Allan Chan, accompanied by Patricia Parker at the
piano, serenades us. The program will take place at St. Paul United Methodist Church in
Woodbridge. As always, it is free to the public but donations are appreciated. I urge
you to spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and acquaintances about this
wonderful concert and perhaps bring someone new with you that evening.

• Sunday, November 22, 2:00 pm. Our first student recital of the season will take place
at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Woodbridge. (Please consider entering your
students in the student recitals. These programs provide additional performance
opportunities for your students and additional revenue for our club.) Submission
deadline: November 7 to Grace Reid, Student Recital Chairperson at
gjanddcbfamily@yahoo.com or by mail to 14531 Crossfield Way, Woodbridge, VA
22191. Refer to the web site or your yearbook for more information.

• Tuesday, December 8, 12:00 pm. We will be celebrating the holidays with a luncheon
at Dak’s Grill (13641 Minnieville Rd., Dale City). Please join us if you are free that
day. (The survey regarding dinner vs. luncheon resulted in the choice for a luncheon as
we have done in the past.

• Saturdays from November 28 to December 19, 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Every year the
WMC hosts a series of 4 community free concerts outside of Quinn’s Jewelers in
Occoquan during the Holiday Season from Thanksgiving until Christmas. Perhaps you
can spend an afternoon in Occoquan, shopping for the Holidays and enjoying one of
these concerts! Please refer to your yearbook for specific information.

Additional reminders:

• Festival. If you intend to take students to the NFMC Festival in February, you must
federate your class. Forms for those who have sent students in the past have already
been mailed out and are due no later than November 30. If you are a new member and
would like to participate this year please contact Nathalie Steinbach at
ymsfred@earthlink.net as soon as possible so you have time to receive the form and
mail it back in. If you don’t have a festival bulletin or if you have questions concerning
the festival please contact Margaret Hunt at 703-368-8766 or VAfestivalfairy@cs.com.
Margaret knows anything and everything there is to know about the NFMC Festival.

• LOGO Design Contest for Students K-12. Deadline for Entries: November 20 to
Laura Riski at laura@riski.biz. The Logo will be used for National Music Week the first
week of May. The winner will receive a $50 card from Music & Arts. Please encourage
your students to enter.

• Volunteer Hours. (Music Outreach) Watch for an email and please keep track of all
your volunteer hours and submit them to Shannon Catabui, Music Outreach
Chairperson, no later than January 15, 2010 at scatabui@hotmail.com. Somehow the
Music Outreach information was deleted from the yearbooks this year. I have included
an attachment of the form for you to download and complete.

• Web site. Don’t forget to refer to the site for any and all information concerning the
Woodbridge Music Club. If you have any pictures that we might use on the site please
send them to Bill Riski at billriski@mac.com.

I wish you all a glorious holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you at one or the other
WMC event.

Musically,
Elaine Brady, D.M.A.
