November Newsletter

A letter from the President

November 6, 2008

Dear WMC Members,

The leaves have fallen and the winter season is soon to be upon us. The holidays are fast approaching, and I can think of no busier time of year. With that in mind, I thought I’d try to stay ahead of things and send out the November/December newsletter before things really got going.

Our event for the month of October was the District II Meeting of the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs. This year our club hosted the meeting which took place on October 17. The entertainment was provided by Betty McCary in a presentation entitled the “World of Wanda Landowska”. It was enjoyed by all as was the lovely luncheon that followed. Many thanks go out to Betty for her wonderful performance and Cyndy Elmore for her efforts in planning and setting up the luncheon.

Here are some reminders about upcoming events:

  • Our first house concert will take place this coming Saturday, November 8, at 5 p.m. at the home of Dr. Elaine Brady. Donna Baldwin has assembled a lovely program of five or so members. If you are free, please join us. Everyone is asked to bring an appetizer or dessert to share. Refer to the “House Concert” email for address and directions.
  • An evening of cello and piano with Amit Peled and Daniel del Pino will be presented on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Woodbridge. The program is free and open to the public but donations are appreciated. I urge you to spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and acquaintances about this wonderful concert and perhaps bring someone new with you that evening.
  • Our first student recital of the season will take place on Sunday, November 23 at 2:30 p.m. in St. Paul United Methodist Church, Woodbridge. (Please consider entering your students in the student recitals. These programs provide additional performance opportunities for your students and additional revenue for our club.) Submit your entries to Dr. Elaine Brady by November 8. Refer to your yearbook for more information.
  • Our holiday luncheon is coming up on Tuesday, December 9. We are planning to go to Osprey’s Landing Restaurant (401 Belmont Bay Drive, Woodbridge 22191) at 11:30 a.m. Please join us if you are free that morning.
  • Every year the WMC hosts a series of community free concerts in Occoquan during the Christmas Season. They take place on Saturdays from Thanksgiving until Christmas. Perhaps you can spend an afternoon in Occoquan, shopping for the Holidays and enjoying one of these concerts! Please refer to your yearbook for specific information.

A final reminder concerning the NFMC festival for students: You must federate your class if you intend to have your students participate in the festival. Contact Natalie Steinbach (ymsfred@earthlink.net) for the form to federate your class. Complete it and mail it in by November 30. Also, contact Margaret Hunt (703-368-8766) about festival specifics – student applications, turn-in dates, etc.

Watch for an email concerning
Volunteer Hours. (Music Outreach) Please keep track of all your hours and submit them to Shannon Catabui no later than January 15, 2009. Refer to the yearbook for the form and other specifics.

Our
web site, WoodbridgeMusicClub.org, is fantastic. Many thanks to our web master, Bill Riski, for all the time and effort he has put into building and maintaining our web site. If you have any pictures that we might use on the site please send them to Bill at billriski@mac.com. Don’t forget to refer to the site for such things as program information and newsletters.

I wish you all a glorious holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you at one or the other WMC event.

Musically,
Elaine Brady, D.M.A.
