March 2009 Newsletter

A Letter from the President

March 9, 2009

Dear Fellow WMC Members,

Here we are again with spring just around the corner. The past few days have been beautiful – we’ve been given a taste of warm weather in anticipation of what is to come. Along with the movement toward warmer weather comes an onslaught of musical activities. Actually this active period began at the end of February and will continue on through May. I will recap for you those activities that have already taken place and then enumerate those that are to come.

  • The NFMC Festival is almost completed with one final day of auditions coming up on Saturday, March 15. Almost 1700 students will have participated in the three-day music festival this year. Thanks to all who helped out in any way.
  • Congratulations to Leslie Bennett for winning 1st place in the NFMC Youse Composition Competition. This is a distinctive honor, and we are proud to have Leslie as one of our members. The WMC plans to present Leslie in a program of her works sometime next year.
  • The Kiki Thomaidis Scholarship Competition took place this past weekend, March 6-7. The 9 winners were featured in a winners’ recital on Sunday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. At the end of the program, the students were presented their awards by Irene Cimino, a member of the Thomaidis family who founded this Scholarship Competition in their mother’s memory. What a treat to hear them all play. Congratulations to winning students and their teachers.

An invite from Laura Riski:

We all remember reading about those evenings in the Romantic Era when musicians would gather together for an evening of song and socializing. Wouldn't it be a wonderful idea to offer this opportunity to musically advancing high school students? And what other wonderful time than during National Music Week?  Elaine Brady has offered her home the evening of May 8 for students to come together, share their craft, and enjoy some refreshments. It would be an informal gathering – a chance to perform and meet others who have a similar interest in music. We are looking for a variety of music and instruments, so all are welcome. Please send me a list of names and contact information (address, phone number, email address) of students who might want to participate in this event. I would like to personally invite each of them. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me and please respond ASAP, so that I can make final arrangements for the evening. Thanks.

  • Friday, May 15 7:00 p.m. – You won’t want to miss an electrifying performance of Makota Nakura on the marimba at Westminster at Lake Ridge, 12191 Clipper Drive, Woodbridge. Please note the new date, time and place for this program.

Next year’s WMC application form will be coming out in the next few months. When it comes, please be sure to complete the NEW Application form and send it in with your dues for next year. Remember that it is only through the recruitment of new members that a club can continue to grow. Spread the word about our club and encourage others to join. Please share with us your ideas for programs, workshops, and other types of offerings that we might incorporate in the future and continue to check on the website for any news or information about the Woodbridge Music Club. (All of these newsletters can be found on that site.)

Sincerely,
Elaine Brady, D.M.A.
